Brand Partners May Pay for Your Wearables

Most small business owners assume branded wearables like polos, shirts, jackets, and caps, are out of reach because of the cost. But here’s something you may not know: if you have a brand partner, you may already have access to money that can help cover it. You just have to know it exists and how to ask for it.

Pro tip

When you wear a recognized partner's logo alongside your own, you borrow equity from their brand. For newer or smaller organizations, that association builds credibility faster than almost anything else you can do.

What Is Co-Op Marketing Funding?

Co-op marketing, sometimes called MDF, or Market Development Funds, is money that larger brands and manufacturers set aside specifically to help their partners market and promote the brand at the local level. The idea is simple: they want their logo out in the world, and they’re willing to help pay for it.

Here’s how it typically works:

Many national brands, franchise systems, suppliers, and industry partners have co-op budgets built into their annual marketing plans. If you sell their products, carry their brand, or operate as one of their affiliates or partners, there’s a good chance some of that money is available to you. And it may have your name on it already.

The catch? Most of it goes unclaimed simply because partners don’t know to ask.

Pro tip

Contact your brand partners and ask directly: "Do you have co-op or MDF funds available, and what are the guidelines for using them?" You may be surprised what's already waiting for you.

What Can Co-Op Funds Be Used For?

Guidelines vary by brand, but co-op funds are commonly approved for:

  • Branded apparel and wearables featuring the partner’s logo
  • Promotional products that carry both logos
  • Event materials like banners, table covers, and signage
  • Trade show booth materials
  • Marketing collateral and print pieces

In most cases, the requirement is simply that the partner’s logo appears alongside yours, exactly like the UAG and AmeriCorps polos. You get the wearables your team needs. They get brand exposure. Everyone wins.

How to Get Started

If you think co-op funding might apply to your situation, here’s a simple starting point. Make a list of every brand you sell, represent, or are formally affiliated with. Then reach out to each one and ask whether they have a co-op or MDF program. Ask how much you may have accrued, what it can be used for, and what the approval process looks like. Get that approval in writing before you place any order, and keep your documentation for reimbursement.

At D and S designs, we work with clients regularly to make sure their wearables orders are structured in a way that qualifies for partner funding when it’s available. If you’re not sure where to start, that’s exactly the kind of conversation we’re here to have.
